I have a '73 TA22 Celica. I have been tracking down a fuel smell from inside the car I think I might have found the problem. on top of the fuel tank (behind the back seat) there is two breather hose, one goes up two the filler cap and the other snakes its way over the top of the tank and down the side to a little black canister then through the floor to the under side of the car. my little black canister is cracked and looked as if it has been weaping fuel vapor and collecting dust when I started to clean it top fell off and a spring fell out but nothing else. I was wondering if this was suppose to have a one way valve setup to stop the fuel vapor from escaping into the car? If someone knows what is inside this canister, please help it is making driving the car very unpleasant.

I think I fixed it, the one way valve was missing out of the canister. so I looked through my box of parts and found another one but it was split the same as the old one but it had the valve, so i glued up the crack, put it back together, went for a drive, no smell. If you run without it you will get a fuel smell out side of the car, because the fuel tank will be venting the fuel vapor all the time. The valve stops this from happening.
