Hi Guys, I bought an '86 Celica ST162 with 3S-GE engine, but noticed water leaking from the water pump, only had it almost a week, the guy neglected to mention anything about the water pump(he mentioned all the other issues ). I was wondering how hard a job it is to do myself, I rang Toyota but the cost for them to do it and buy the genuine pump totalled about the same as I payed for the car. So I am tossing up whether to tackle it myself or just sell the car for someone else to fix??? Cheers Dennis

From memory Dennis its a prick of a job (due to the confined space in that area its one of those jobs where you might aswell do everything else while your in there eg. (the belt front seals and the oil pump seals) hope this helps mate

The last place you should take it to is Toyota, prob good idea to get a genuine pump tho. local servo/mechanic would be cheaper option, or even better, have a read of the workshop manual and give it a go yourself.

Had a look over the manual, it great thanks Stoney. It doesn't look too bad, just be a bitch to get at stuff with the engine in I guess.

ill tell you now after having to replace three water pumps, i actually had the whole removing timing belt and stuff down pat. i could change a water pump in about 25 minutes if i was hard at it. and on the same note you need an engine crane to help lift or lower the engine in the bay at times to either access things or line things up. like celicasupra7m said try and get genuin parts for your engine, im only saying this frem experience but my last pump was a toyota bought pump and its lasted, i get all my parts that i possibly can from toyota as i can get parts at trade price. but i went with the likes of my 3sge water pump, i bought a 92 st185 gtfour group A rallye oil pump and pully, a genuine 5s 3 layer metal head gasket, they will be your best bet for anything. another mechanic may be cheaper for laybor but thats the only real difference. they will still sting you the same price for the water pump as toyota would, your best bet will be to do some research buy the pump of toyota and put it in when you have spare time. it will save you loads more money that way.
and another thing if you are struggling with it i live in launceston too. im always willing to give people a hand
