These are the issues im having when driving my car under load it backfires through the carby and has a bad miss. I actually thought at first the coil had shit itself so i replaced that it didnt work so i stripped and cleaned the carby that didnt work so i then stripped and cleaned the distributor replaced the points, condensor, rotor button No go Grrr... I've also done the valve clearances and fitted an electric fuel pump its also had the timing done with the light oh yeah and new plug leads. So someone please tell me where im going wrong lol? ?

When did you fit the electric fuel pump? may have too much fuel pressure? Has the motor ever run sweet with that carby Does it miss like its running on 3 cyls or surge/cut out completely?
Could even be vacuum leak at the manifold. or a cracked valve. Most likely it will be carby related tho i think. if you've ruled out valve timing and spark timing.
can you borrow/steal another carb to try?

runs the same with both pumps and yer it used to run sweet with this carby im thinking carby too i can borrow one to try but its a 28/36 where im currently running a 32/36 i guess it would be fine to rule out this issue though.

From the sound of it, it does sound like it's fuel related mate. How old is the fuel in it? There is a lot of dodgey fuel going around at the moment. Or yeah, you have gotten your moneys worth outta that carbie! A webber would be the go for sure too! Have you tried the carbie jet unblocking tricks? Revving it up and putting a rag over the venturi, as it chokes keep cracking open the throttle, then before the revs get to low take the rag off and getthe thing to pick the revs back up by fanning the throttle, try this two or three times. Can sometimes suck any of the junk out of the jets. Or another way, swap leads two and four and start it causing it to back fire back up through the carbie! Just a couple of ideas mate!

It seems to have been the valve clearances on the intake side were too tight i backed them off by (i will do them properly when time allows) apart from the nasty tapet rattle lol it seems to be running much better thanks to everyone for taking the time to throw some ideas about.

So does this mean your going to the ross car show now or you are still going to pull the engine out and put the 2t twin cam in.

unless the valves had NO clearance when hot, you wouldn't think it was the problem would you?
